History of
Cannock Chase

 

Cannock Chase is one of the largest country parks as 3500 hectares, comprising of forest and open heathland and was designated and "area of outstanding natural beauty" (ANOB) in 1958 by the countryside commission and the open heath is classed as a "Site of Special Scientific Interest" (SSI) by English Nature.

 

The Chase comprises of rare lowland heath, ancient woodland, sustainable forest and a herd of approximately 800 fallow deer who roam freely throughout the Chase,

 

The Chase has a rich industrial history and a long standing connection with the military. in the 13th century Cannock Chase was the hunting preserve of the Bishops of Lichfield. Today Cannock Chase is owned or leased by the Forestry Commission and Staffordshire County Council and is used by over 2.5 million visitors each year.
