The Equestrian Theatre Ltd,
Spirit of the Horse event

This excellent show is touring the UK at the moment, and having just seen it,
it may be of interest to others in the UK that like horses and unicorns too.
They feature a "unicorn" in the show as well as Pegasus too. For details

If you like horses, I think you will like the show.

Unicorn Artwork, the Elfwood Gallery

One place I often visit to find original artwork on the internet is the
Elfwood gallery at http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/elfwood.html

It states it is the largest home of amateur Science Fiction & Fantasy art and
fiction, and I believe this to be quite a true statement from what I've
seen ! It's a non-profit project created and maintained by
Thomas F Abrahamsson and others, based in Sweden.

There is a lot of wonderful unicorn artwork to be
found on there in the "Lothlorien" online art gallery !
Don't set out with the intention of spending a short time
going through this site, you wont, in fact, you could spend weeks !
There is that much artwork there, and some of it of a very high standard
indeed ! There is a search engine there that will help you find things though.
(Please note, some images there may not be suitable for minors !)

In the last edition, I reviewed the pages of two artists I found there,
So, here are pointers to some more artists pages I've enjoyed seeing recently:-

One you really have to see is the artwork of Marilyn Alice Boyle. There are
a number of excellent unicorn pictures there, all beautifully drawn
which also convey a lot of the passion and feeling of the artist.

Another artists work i saw there and was particularly impressed by
was Donna Maria Waltz. She does some excellent and astounding
work with 'Photoshop' and 'Poser' software. One picture in particular,

is one of the best I've see recently, it's beautifully done, full
of fine detail and has a wonderful atmospheric quality
so do take a look. Others I recommend are ;

Two more artists who have done some impressive Unicorn artwork are
Mia Bengtsson (do see elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/m/i/mist/siluett.jpg.html,
it's a very atmospheric picture) and Tess Garman (the picture at
elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/t/i/tigo/unicorn.jpg.html
is quite beautiful and worth seeing).

I will be mentioning more unicorn artwork from this gallery
site over the next few editions...........

Pages of Special Merit

This is where I review pages worthy of special merit each edition.
These are pages I've visited or revisited that have something
unique and original about them, they may really do show that the
author has put a lot of effort into writing and designing the site
or display artwork or stories of exceptional originality.
It's a personal award really, to recognise hard work,
originality, good design or just dedication to Unicorns.

This editions award doesn't go to a site that is mainly about unicorns, in fact
it's main topic is horses. However the author of this site is a talented artist and
sculptor who has for a number of years now been drawing unicorns, and
placing these in a free 'colouring book' on the internet for everyone to enjoy.

But not only that, this person has done something totally amazing.....
In 1996 she took an idea to create a website, and over the
years has taken this from a few pages, and turned it into a
thriving online community ! Always innovative (she creates her
own web graphics, often animated) she has, together with
the help of her own family, created something wonderful....

Previous Special Merit Winners and Issue Dates

New Websites

As usual there are a number of new sites to look at for this edition
that have been added to the Unicorn links page (which was
moved to a separate page then split into two some time ago).

Mystical unicorn is an excellent and beautifully designed site full
of information, pictures, poems and stories.

Two art sites that have some good unicorn artwork are
Alicorn Creative Designs (see Stephanie Small's excellent work)
and also Cathey's Gallery at www.unicornpaintings.com.

I've found a number of German language Unicorn sites recently ;
Angel Monolith`s Magic Esoterik HomePage has a multilingual translator
and has a unicorn page at www.monolith-x.de/fs01.htm.
Die Deutsche Einhornpage is attractively designed site with
plenty of things to see including a picture gallery.
Unicorn United Nations is a nicely designed site has news,
pictures poems and information on unicorns. Two other
good new German sites are Mein Einhorn - Kompendium and
www.brociliande.de, a nice site with unicorn and dragon pages.

And if you ever wanted to ask the question 'Do I spend a lot of
time looking for Unicorn sites ?', the answer is YES 8-).
Just don't ask how big my monthly phone bill is, or
if my computer chair is worn out yet ! OK <grin>

Unicorn Movies
(updated May 2002)

Recently a number of unicorn movies have either been released
or re-released on DVD disc or VHS cassette or are about to be;

"Legend"

This was recently released on DVD here in the UK in a wide-screen
version. Many of you will have already have seen it or know of it, it's
quite a wonderful film, and is worth seeing.

There is also a long rumoured "special edition" coming
out, maybe sometime mid-late May. If it does, you'll hear
about it here, as I'll have a copy ! Hopefully the "special
edition" will also be released in the UK, and at the same,
as the USA, but sadly this is so often not the case *sigh*

"The Little Unicorn"

Available on the UK and USA Amazon sites, news of this movie was
first given here back in the April 2001 edition of this page.
It's an enjoyable and quite magical story, and well worth
seeing if you like unicorns. I got my copy of this on DVD a week
ago, and was pleased to see it was region 0 (playable anywhere).

"Nico the Unicorn"

If you've not seen this one, then please do so!
It's a wonderful story based on the book by the same title,
and is a most enjoyable family film with a gripping climax and a
happy ending. They even gave the names of the horse 'actors' in the
end credits which is too often forgotten, a very nice touch indeed!
I will say no more and spoil it for you, apart from that it was
far better than I ever expected, so go and get a copy 8-)

And finally on movies.............

On another note entirely..........
I got my "Nico the Unicorn" copy from Amazon in the USA as it does not appear to
be in the UK yet, hence is only viewable on Region 1 compatible DVD players
unless someone knows otherwise (and do let me know). There are sadly many
titles concerning unicorns that you cannot get easily or at all in the UK,
even some that are produced over here ! So you UK DVD and VHS
movie distributors and publishers, GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER !
Why do the UK consumers have to put up with being
treated as second class citizens all the time ?
That's my rant for the month over <grin>

Unicorn Rocking Horses

This absolutely wonderful 46" high carved unicorn rocking horse was
sculpted by DJ Liccardi, and can be found on the "Rare Breed"
Rocking Horse website at www.djlrarebreed.com
There are also many examples of other rocking horses there too.

The Enchanted Art Collection

Fantasy Watercolorist, Jessica Galbreth has some unicorn artwork
prints of various sizes for sale, (as well as dragons and various
other subjects) on her website, "The Enchanted Art Collection"

This recently opened online store has many wonderful unicorn

The Lost Unicorns:
(The Portrayal of Unicorns in Contemporary Art)

The Lost Unicorns is an article excellent article by Karkadann with accompanying
illustrations which deals with what the appearance of a unicorn should really
be. The entire website at http://www.avians.net/paragon is well worth a visit
too, it's well illustrated and is dedicated to creatures of myth and legend.

Johnnas Stained Glass and Gifts has a series of excellent and quite beautiful
hand crafted stained glasswork unicorns.

Enchanted Fantasies has unicorn figures within it's collection, as does

Unicorn pictures (where to find them)

There are some sites with large and growing Unicorn picture collections.
There is a site with an excellent unicorn picture collection at Danielle's Unicorn Page,
Unicorn Dreams has a growing collection of pictures, good quality scans too.
Holly's Unicorn Meadow has been recently updated and enlarged,
Theresa Farrell's site has some very good original fantasy artwork in her gallery.
Welcome To Wild Unicorns has an extensive collection, and
Paladin's Last Unicorn Page has a large collection of 'The Last Unicorn' movie images
Both of these are excellent web sites too, Paladins page has a bookstore too.
However, I still think Neysa may have one of the largest collections of unicorn
pictures on the internet, several artists exhibit their work there.

The artwork of Gissel E.

This artist from Uruguay has recently done some wonderful Unicorn drawings.
They are being kindly being hosted by Neysa on her Unicorn picture page.
I must also thank Gissel E. for a wonderful picture she sent to me.

Neysa's Unicorn Picture Page has also been re-designed and moved
recently to a new URL. This must be the best Unicorn picture
collection on the net and it's always worth a visit.

Miscellaneous topics

You can see a wonderful Pegasus statue in the process of being made!
If you visit the website of the artist and sculptor Cary J. Van Dansik ,
and take a look at the Pegasus page, you will get great insight into
the creation of beautiful sculpture of Pegasus, based on a portrait
of Welsh mountain stallion. There is also a pair of unicorns
there too, as well as the most wonderful equine sculptures
you will probably ever see.

More Unicorn Pictures

This is one of the first unicorn pictures I've done myself.
Its based on a photograph of a horse I took which

Another unusual unicorn picture.
These two impressive stone unicorn figures are
on a factory wall in Stafford near my home.
They were erected when the building was
constructed which was sometime around 1937-1938.

This picture, created using Photoshop, was sent to me by Mare Astra
as a self portrait. She is significant for having one of the first Unicorn
websites I ever found on the internet, and her site helped to
inspire the creation of this website over three years ago.

These two pictures were sent to me by an artist called Gennale.
I liked them so much I requested permission to put them
on my page, so here they are. The picture on the left is
called Tatianna, and the one on the right is called Wild.

Content and Originality

Original work is becoming rarer, and certainly should be valued. But too many
websites recently though are copying others ideas and then claiming
sole right to it themselves ! They also often use annoying Java code that
stops the right mouse button from working. It's not easy to review pages
easily for mention on this page or bookmark them when half the
browsers functions have been disabled by unfriendly Java code !
